Continued Competence (Officers, Engineers & Chief Integrated Rating)

This course is designed for those candidates who need to meet AMSA requirements for seafarers to demonstrate STCW short course continued competence ashore in sea survival and fire fighting for seafarers with sea service in the preceding five (5) years.

Overview

Those who successfully complete this course will be able to demonstrate the minimum standard of competence required to contribute to the enhancement of sea survival and fire fighting.

NOTE: Assessment is based on practical demonstration.

Course Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Survive at sea in the event of vessel abandonment
  • Take charge of a survival craft or rescue boat during and after launch
  • Use location devices including communication and signalling apparatus and pyrotechnics
  • Minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire
  • Fight and extinguish fires
  • Control fire fighting operations aboard ship
  • Organise and train fire parties
  • Investigate and compile reports on incidents involving fire

PREREQUISITES

Participants must already hold a certificate of competency or a chief integrated rating certificate of proficiency. Masters and Deck and Engineer Officers with no qualifying sea service in the preceding five (5) years will be required to complete at an AMSA approved college an AMSA approved revalidation course of the required discipline, which includes the full certificate of proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats and Advanced Fire Fighting courses.

ON-COMPLETION

On successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with an AMSA Course Completion Statement in accordance with AMSA requirements.
