This course is designed for those who are responsible for the operation of Freefall Lifeboats on-board ships.

This course aims to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and confidence to safely launch, operate and recover a Freefall Lifeboat using the appropriate systems and procedures. It also aims to provide knowledge of Muster Checker and Bowman duties.

Course Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Control muster
  • Conduct organised deployment of lifeboat (Totally Enclosed Motor Powered Survival Craft)
  • Provide leadership in lifeboat deployment and welfare of personnel
  • Recover TEMPSC

In order to be issued with a certificate of attendance the attendee must be at least 18 years old and must hold a current AMSA endorsed Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats certificate. The original PSC certificate must be produced at the training centre before the Free Fall Life Boat certificate can be issued.


On successful completion of the course, participants will be issued with a certificate of attendance for Freefall Lifeboat Training that satisfies the requirements laid down in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978, as amended, (STCW Section BI/14) and in accordance with Marine Order 28.
