The course is delivered by SETS Enterprises Pty Ltd RTO 52334. This course aims to train participants to be capable of identifying hazards that require the use and operation of open circuit breathing apparatus, as well as controlling teams of others using breathing apparatus at an emergency scene.

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and state the concepts of atmospheric contents and the process of respiration
  • Inspection and operational checks of Open Circuit Breathing Apparatus
  • Don and use Open Circuit Breathing Apparatus
  • Identify and run breathing apparatus and entry control procedures
  • Use communications during breathing apparatus operations
  • Correctly instigate entrapment procedures
  • Work as a member of a breathing apparatus team
  • Apply search and rescue techniques; and
  • Clean and maintain Open Circuit Breathing Apparatus equipment


Successful completion of the assessment requirements, will provide participants with a statement of attainment issued by SETS (RTO Code 52334) for PUAFIR207B Operate breathing apparatus open circuit and PUAFIR215 & Prevent injury.

This course can be conducted at IFAP’s North Lake (WA) training facility or at any facility that has a suitable classroom and training area.

There is a maximum number of 12 participants per program.

The national competency package for this subject requires that participants be clean shaven as per the requirement of AS 1715. It is also highly recommended that participants have a fitness level appropriate to members of an active response team.
